DESCRIPTION:

Today is the 50th Anniversary of the Moon Landing. If you were alive on July 20, 1969, you were watching television.

Personally, though alive, this writer does not recall it, (I had just turned three and my sister was only seven months old). However, mom and dad, like millions of moms and dads the world over, sat me and my little sister down in front of the black and white television at 1:OO PM PST in our living room. We watched as Neil Armstrong stepped onto the moon. It was a defining moment in history and science and a nice cap to a decade, which saw tremendous upheaval.

The event occurred six hours after landing at 4:17 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (with less than 30 seconds of fuel remaining). Neil A. Armstrong stepped off the Lunar Module onto the surface of the Moon exclaiming: "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."

He was joined by Buzz Aldrin and the two astronauts spent 21-hours on the lunar surface, returning with 46 pounds of lunar rocks.
